Larry Rhodes
As recorded by Warren Haynes on Ashes & Dust (2015).
Any Bb instruments (clarinet, tenor/soprano sax, some trumpets) will need to play one full
step higher than the guitars. Warren recorded this on his 335 with a super clean, warm
jazzy tone with a mid boost and rolling back the volume on the guitar.
Note that the Gm7 in the third stanza of each verse could be a Bb major chord. I felt like
the G bass note was correct, but you could play it either way and it will sound fine. You
can also use an Fmaj7/C instead of the F major for a jazzier sound.
Dm/C: x3x231
Dm/B: x2x031
Gm6/Bb: x10030
Gm7: 3x333x
Bb7: xx3334
Fmaj7/C: x33210
Capo II
[Verse 1]
Oh the daydreams I can create
When the moonbeam is on the snowflake
And lonesome is my only friend.
Yeah I feel so forsaken,
Like the good times are on vacation,
And they ain’t comin’ home again.
Sitting here without her
I get to thinking about her
And you know that feeling just ain’t right
[Refrain]
She’s in New York City
And I’m stranded in self pity
Don’t you play no blues tonight
[Solo]
[Verse 2]
‘Cause your guitar will get to cryin’
And I’ll sure get to sighin’
From my hat down to my soul
There’s a favor you can do me
Don’t sing no sad songs to me
Oh ‘cause buddy I already know
If my luck would change
I’d catch myself an aeroplane
And I’d leave you and these damned old blues behind
[Refrain]
But she’s in New York City
And I’m stranded in self-pity
Don’t you play no blues tonight
[Fiddle solo]
[Refrain]
Yeah she’s in New York City
And I’m stranded in self-pity
Don’t you sing no blues tonight
Yeah she’s in New York City
And I’m stranded in self-pity
N.C.
Don’t you sing no blues tonight
[Clarinet solo w/ vocal ad lib]
[Outro]
Don’t you sing no blues
Don’t you sing no blues
Tonight
