Better Be Home Soon
(N. Finn)
INTRO:
somewhere deep inside
something's got a hold on you
and it's pushing me aside
see it stretch on forever
I know I'm right
for the first time in my life
that's why I tell you
you'd better be home soon
stripping back the coats
of lies and deceiption
back to nothingness
like a week in the desert
I know I'm right
for the first time in my life
that's why I tell you
C Em7/B*
you'd better be home soon
so don't say no, don't say nothing's wrong
cos when you get back home maybe I'll be gone
INSTR. BREAK:
Bb7*
it would cause me pain
if we were to end it
but I could start again
you can depend on it
I know I'm right
for the first time in my life
that's why I tell you
you'd better be home soon
that's why I tell you
you'd better be home soon

Can't Carry On
(N. Finn)
NOTE:
-- Another of these songs where, although I've given chords, what Neil
Finn is playing guitar-wise is a chord with different, little fills in
between the lyric lines.
Why do I kid myself
Why do I scream for pleasure
It's four in the morning should know better
But she can weave a spell
Want it to last forever
Making me feel like somebody special
CHORUS
Can't carry on this way (just go to sleep)
Before it gets too late (just go to sleep)
Doing damage to my brain (just go to sleep)
Well here we go again
Though I look everywhere
I never seem to find it
Always a shadow around a corner
Drown it in alcohol
Stuck in the elevator
Hard to remember in the morning
Chorus
Tell you about myself
If you're in the mood to listen
Baby you don't know who you're kissing
This is a lonely world
You are a strange companion
When you get what you wanted
You want to leave
Honestly I want to free myself
From the burden of inaction
Honestly I want to raise myself
To any plane I can imagine
Honestly I want to free myself
From the burden of inaction
Honestly I want to raise myself
To any plane I can imagine
Can't carry on this way (just go to sleep)
Before it gets too late
Doing damage to my brain (just go to sleep)
Well here we go again
(just go to sleep) I want to free myself
(just go to sleep) I want to raise myself
Closing:

Don't Dream It's Over
(N. Finn)
NOTES:
-- Neil's guitar is tuned down one half-step for this song. If
you're going to try and play along, you'll have to do the same.
-- For all you bar chord haters, this is one song you won't like. Every
chord is a bar chord. of course, you don't -have- to play it that way.
the first chord is on the 7th fret, second is on the 4th, etc. if you
are having any difficulties with these chords, contact me (marck@nwu.edu).
INTRO: E(9)* E9* E7sus*
E(9) C#(9)*
There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
E(9) C#(9)
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me
CHORUS
Hey now, hey now
E(9) C#(9)
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
E(9) C#(9)
When the world comes in
They come, they come
E(9) C#(9)
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page
CHORUS
(Chords under Hammond organ solo: E(9) C#(9) A G#)

Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart

Hole in the River
(N. Finn/ E. Rayner)
NOTES:
-- For the intro, if you sit on an Em chord on the 7th fret (X79987),
you can find your way around the main melody line of the keyboard that
Eddie Rayner is playing. (The guitar part at that point is just doing
that damped string/percussive thing, so when playing it alone on an
acoustic, it helps to play around on the Em.)
-- The psychedelic instrumental break is composed entirely on C#m (a
last-minute idea from Nick Seymour that saved this song from being
scrapped.) All the fun stuff is going on in the keyboards, while the
guitar just sits on that one chord. I would suggest creating a guitar
solo for this section (which is what Neil does when it's performed
live).
INTRO: Keyboard doodling around Em
There's a hole in the river where my auntie lies
From the land of the living to the air and sky
Left her car by the river left her shoes beside
Through the thorns and the bushes I hope she was ...
Am/G* Am/F#*
Dreaming of glory
Miles above the mountains and plains
Free at last
We were touched by a cold wind, my father and I
The sound of desperate breathing her fear inside us all
She was coming to see him but something changed her mind
Drove her down to the river
There is no return

NOTE:
-- on the verses, Neil's guitar is doing more picking than strumming, so
try to avoid strumming it.

that kind of view don't need an explanation
I'm not lying, not asking for anything
I just want to be there when it happens again

I Walk Away
(N. Finn)
NOTES:
-- the opening of this song and the verses use a lot of limited picking
of just a few strings. the best thing to do is check out the "unusual
chords" at the end of this file and, when playing, only pick the strings
that you're actually fingering.
INTRO: D* D4* (Bm)* A*
You came
Out of this world to me
My life
Parted like the Red Sea
We flowed
Easy between the rocks and stones
Never seemed to stop us
The years
Ended in confusion
Don't ask me I don't know what happened
But I am
A man with a mission
Must be the devil I don't know
Find me marching to a different tune
It's hard to let go
Of all that we know
As I walk away from you
Hurled from my home
Into the unknown
As I walk away from you
Reveal whatever you desire
To you it may be death defying
Black day
In the coldness of winter
Black words
Slipping off my tongue
I say forget it--it's over
As a dark cloud covered up the sun
It's hard to let go
Of all that we know
As I walk away from you
The sun always sets
With room for regrets
As I walk away from you
Give it to me
Give it to me
Your inspiration
Give to receive
Find all we need
As I walk away
I'm just a slave to ambition
Tension your permanent condition
So much you've always wanted
Too much given' you a sore head
I walk away
As I walk away from you
As I walk away from you

INTRO: A4*
oh hell trouble is coming
out here in panic and alarm
black shapes gather in the distance
looks like it won't take long
the first drops land on the window
the first sign that there's something wrong
light rain and a head full of thunder
which way, which way
two days till I get to you
I'll be late if I ever get through
where I go there'll be no kind welcome
coming down upon me
time will keep me warm
feel my face
now the insects swarm
in the lowlands
fear will take the place of desire
and we will fan the flames from on high
try for heavens sake
the sky fell underneath a blanket
the sun sank as the miles went by
sit back with your head on the pillow
when you remember it makes you cry
ghost cars on the freeway
like friends that you thought you had
one by one they are disappearing
time will keep me warm

in the lowlands
fear will take the place of desire
and we will fan the flames from on high

Into Temptation
(N. Finn)
-- the reason the acoustic guitar part on the verses in this song is so
wonderful is because Neil limits the number of strings he plays to only
a few. since this is so key, i've included *all* the chords for the
verses at the end. take special note to which strings should not be
played at all (X).
INTRO:
you opened up your door

you in your new blue dress
taking away my breath
the cradle is soft and warm
couldn't do me no harm
you're showing me how to give
into temptation
A/C#*
knowing full well the earth will rebel
into temptation
a muddle of nervous words
could never amount to betrayal
the sentence is all my own
the price is to watch it fail
as I turn to go
you looked at me for half a second
with an open invitation
for me to go
into temptation
knowing full well the earth will rebel
into temptation
safe in the wide open arms of hell
we can go sailing in
climb down, lose yourself when you linger long
into temptation
right where you belong
the guilty get no sleep
in the last slow hours of morning
experience is cheap
I should've listened to the warning
but the cradle is soft and warm
into temptation
knowing full well the earth will rebel
into your wide open arms
no way to break the spell

Love You 'Til the Day I Die
(N. Finn)
NOTES:
-- Listening to this song, the guitar work sounds very complex. I
was pleasantly surprised to find out that the verses are constructed
on two chords. However, Neil is adding a lot of other little licks
and "side chords" in between to make things interesting. (for exam-
ple, one of his faves is an Em form like this: X7978[10].) I would
suggest you do your own goofing around and figure out what works.
-- The bridge ("Frost on the window pane...") is particularly tricky
in this song, but once you get the fingerings down, it flows beauti-
fully.
INTRO: B7* Em* B7 Em B7 Em

So forgive me if I tell a lie
Sometimes I come on cold but don't believe it

Mean To Me
(N. Finn)
She came all the way from America
Had a blind date with destiny
And the sound of Te Awamutu
Had a truly sacred ring
Now her parents are divorced
And her friend's committing suicide
I could not escape
A plea from the heart
You know what it means to me
She said don't walk away
I'm down on my knees
So please don't be mean to me
So I talked to you for an hour
In the bar of a small town hotel
You asked me what I was thinking
I was thinking of a padded cell
With a black and white T.V.
To stop us from getting lonely
I could not escape
A plea from the heart
You know what it means to me
She said don't walk away
I'm down on my knees
So please don't be mean to me
No, I could not escape
A plea from the heart
Mysterious sympathy
I couldn't wait for a chance
To walk out the door
You know what it means to me
I saw you lying in the arms of a poet
I heard him tell you t...tantalizing lies (about me)
Well whad'd'ya know, whad'd'ya know
I could not escape
You're down on the floor
You know what it means to me
I couldn't wait for a chance
To walk out the door

why do you weep
for the passing of ages
you slip with the back of your hand
you're taking it out on the one you love
I couldn't believe it
but we might still survive
G Am Am/G#* Am/G
and rise up through the maze
if you could change your life
and never be the same

how long must I wait
for you to release me
I pay for each mistake
while you suffer in silence
I could still have an easy life
but the life ain't worth living
once more will i hear you say
we might still survive
and rise up through the maze
if you could change your life
and never be the same
[Instr. break on G]
don't stand around
like friends at a funeral
eyes to the ground
don't suffer in silence
'cause we might still survive
and rise up through the maze
if you could change your life
and never be the same
everytime I hear you
never be the same
and everytime I mess up
never be the same

Now We're Getting Somewhere
(N. Finn)
NOTES:
-- Chords in Intro should be damped with heel of hand. when verse starts,
go ahead and let them sustain.
-- The lead-in to the second verse is also used during the rideout section
when Neil's not soloing (starting with "When you took me to your room ...").
INTRO:
It never used to be that bad
But neither was it great
Somewhere in the middle than
Content and much too safe
Ooh tell me please
Why it takes so long
To realize when there's something wrong
CHORUS
Lay me out with your heart
Now we're gettin' somewhere
Push me back to the start
Now we're gettin' somewhere
Take me out let me breathe
Now we're gettin' somewhere
When I'm with you I don't care
Where it is I'm falling
Lead-in to second verse:
---------------------------|
---------------------------|
---2-----2------2-----2----|
---------------------------|
-2---------0--2---------0--|
-----0>2----------0>2------|
There's money in the Bible Belt
Hugs for daddy too
Three wishes for eternity
We've got some work to do
Ooh tell me please, tell me what went wrong
Cos I believe there is something wrong
CHORUS

Sister Madly
(N. Finn)
NOTES:
-- to play this the way it was originally played, all chords on the
verses are bar chords: Em on the 7th fret, A on the 5th fret, and
C on the 8th fret.
-- in the tab of the Richard Thompson solo, the notation "11^" means to
play the 11th fret but bend the note up (not necessarily all the way up
to the tone of the 12th fret--just a quick, ornamental bend. you know,
Thompson is famous for this kind of thing.)
INTRO:

Tombstone
(N. Finn)
Look at all the plans I made
Falling down like scraps of paper
I will leave them where they lie to remind me
From the past a rumour comes
Don't let it keep draggin' you down
Throw the memory in an open fire
You'll be free
D Asus* A
Roll back the tombstone
Let the saints appear
Roll back the tombstone
Make a new man out of me
Beware the passenger
The train already left the station
We are neither at home nor at work
We are moving
Listen to the howling of steel
A face betraying no emotion
Like you never had a chance to be
Wild and free
Roll back the tombstone
Let the saints appear
Roll back the tombstone
Till the Lone Ranger rides again
G A D7sus4*
Rides again in your mind
Rode across the open plain
All the way
and back again
